The ethics of bioprospecting

with Serena Heckler

and with Mike Marshall

Serena Heckler is an anthropologist at the University of Durham. She spoke to Mike Marshall about the ethical problems associated with bioprospecting, the practice of visiting indigenous people in order to use their knowledge to develop new medicines and technologies. Bioprospecting is intimately tied up with a range of problems such as social inequality, land ownership and exploitation, and remains a key issue for modern technological development.
