"Computer says no": the social aspects of computer misuse A lecture by Stefan Fafinski, University of Leeds, UK Zombies, botnets, Trojans, worms, viruses, phishing, spam and justplain hacking. Alongside the benefits to society, the growth in computing power and availability has broughta new and expanding world of computer misuse which is often (wrongly) thought of as computer crime. Why do individuals commit computer misuse? How do they see the virtual world? In this talk Stefan Fafinski will provide an insight into the motivations that underlie computer misuse and explain the difficulties the law faces. Stefan will consider alternative complementary means of cyber-regulation before discussing the ways in which individuals and organisations could become more resilient to cyber-attack.About the speaker: After graduating in natural sciences from St John's College, Cambridge in 1989, Stefan spent fifteen years building a career in the IT professional services industry which was recognised by his election to Chartered Fellowship of the British Computer Society in 2003. After working for a variety of employers to Senior Director level, he established a research-based consultancy organisation that has involved him in a range of social science research projects. A number of these projects have had a significant public impact and have led to several speaking engagements, including a 2005 debate at the Royal Society. His socio-legal interests developed following the attainment of a first class honours degree in law as a mature student. This has led to ongoing research through the University of Leeds into the social and legal implications of the criminalisation of computer misuse.
