Classic autism and Asperger Syndrome are two subgroups on the autistic spectrum. Both lead to social and communication difficulties, theformer also involving learning difficulties. Both also involve thedevelopment of strong, narrow, unusual interests - sometimesdisparagingly called 'obsessions'. In this lecture, Professor SimonBaron-Cohen analyses the nature of 'obsessional interests' and reveals that they entaila talent for 'systemising'. Systemising is the drive to understandhow systems work and how to predictthem. Science is a good example of systemizing. The lecture then looksat the intriguing possibility that there may be a link between autismand strong systemizing. Do the genes for autism and scientific abilityrun in the same families, for example?
